Alright Oppo, we’ve seen the cars that fell !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and cars that made a huge jump from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Now, I want you to show me all your screaming, shameless bias and fanboyism by telling me which car is so good you’d have to be a fool to pick one of its competitors. They can be from any era. This should get interesting...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

My nomination goes to the Chevrolet Volt. Want a hybrid or EV? Don’t want to pay for a Tesla? Personally, I wouldn’t consider any other car in the class. Pruis? Insight? Fit EV? Fuggedaboutit.

Kinja'd!!!

If someone else wants to do a “what car got drastically worse between generations?” question to round things out, that’d be great. Meanwhile, I’m going to sit hear and let the games begin. If anyone asks where the beginning of the end was for Oppo, link them to this post.

The Volt is a great example of this having personally driven one. I also nominate the Nissan Maxima. Back in the 90s and early 2000s it seriously outclassed its competitors in every performance area. Today though it seems Nissan has tried so hard to make a Camry with a bunch of horsepower they have really lost sight of the important things.

Full size Sedan? Chevy’s gotcha.

Best sports car for the price? Corvette has you covered.

The Studebaker Lark was much better than other early 60s compacts. Had the strongest frame, traditional construction, and an optional supercharger. It rode the best and looked cute in a kind pug-ugly, unique way — the way a compact should look.

The Pontiac Tempest and Early Corvairs had swing axles (bleh). Even the later Corvairs with fully independent suspension and turbochargers can’t match the cool factor of a Supercharged V8. The Olds F-85 and Buick Special had an Aluminum 215, while innovative, left a lot to be desired (at least in my opinion as an Oldsmobile fanboy). The Ford Falcons were creaky and unpleasant. Dodge Darts and Plymouth Valiants were excellent and could be ordered with high performing engines, but I think Studebaker gets the nod for everything else.

I think the Beetle was below the price point of even the base models of all these cars. However, given how unreliable and spartan ours was, I’d see no reason to own back in the day other than you couldn’t afford anything else and you liked the way it looked. You could get a whole lot more car if you just spent a little more money.

Please tell me how I’m to the point of delusion? I don’t even drive a GM product right now because the ones in my price range when buying a car were utter shit. Their current products are good, the Suburban and Impala are the best sellers in their respective classes, and the Corvette has had nothing but praise thrown at it, yet me stating they’re the best in the classes makes me delusional? And you have no room to talk on the fanboy front, since in the past your name has in fact had “Toyota fanboy” in it. So once, again fuck off with that delusional bullshit.

Not really, I’ve admitted I’d get a Camaro over a Mustang. Shit, in a couple of years, financially depending, I might just pick up a new Camaro, it’s pretty fucking sick. I’ve admitted Toyota makes mediocre cars because they can, with a few exceptions. But when you actually believe a Cobalt(non SS) is better built than a Caliber(Let’s face it, we wouldn’t have had nearly as many arguments had it not been for this cars poor quality. GM wouldn’t have had to recall 90% of the cars it made in the past 15 years, if it weren’t for the Cobalt and it’s badge swapped siblings.), it’s time to seek help.

Fair enough. Most of the arguments we’ve had were definitely emotions getting high with a bit of brand allegiance thrown in there.

I will say this though, we never had any issues with our 2004 Ion and we had that for over 120k miles. Same with pretty much every GM car my family has owned in my life. Had more issues with Ford’s than GM cars.

Im not going to claim this is significantly better but it is consistently better

Kinja'd!!!

Its not the top of the pack in its class for any one given spec but as a package as a whole it has consistently whooped up on cars with higher specs in its class and it oddly wins almost every head to head it competes in. Not sure ill ever own one, but it is the king of its class

To be fair to GM, we’ve had a bunch of them. The only Ford we’ve had was an old F100 with a 300 I6 and a 4 speed, so it was the one unkillable vehicle they made, pre-7.3 Powerstroke.

All of our trucks have been reliable, all were Duramax equipped. The GMT800 Silverado we had has over 150K right now and has only had glow plugs replaced. No other issues with any of them. To each their own I guess.

The Duramax(with the exception of the LB7, though most of those have been remedied) is a good engine, it’s just in need of a serious update to be competitive. I think the Allison is probably what is holding it back tbh. Ford’s Torqueshift is every bit as good in some ways, and better in others. Even Dodge has stepped up to bat with the new Aisin unit.

05/19/2015 at 00:14

Kinja'd!!!0

There’s supposed to be a new engine out within the next couple of years I believe. Although the current engine is still more than adequate. I don’t think the Cummins and PS motors really need to have nearly 900 lb-ft of torque because 765 lb-ft isn’t a low amount by any stretch. I guess we’ll see what comes of the new one. I do think they are behind on max towing but you don’t really see many people towing at 31,000# or what ever the other two are at so 23,500# still is pretty good.

Yeah. I think I’d still go GM because I like their trucks, but I’d consider the Ram. My grandfather likes GM, but isn’t really as brand oriented although he does get loyalty discounts with GM since he’s purchased 5 GMs the last 15 or so years. He’s considered Ram, but I guess we’ll see where he goes when he feels the need for a new truck, or if he’ll buy a Camaro or something else sportier.
